# New Features and Improvements in FRITZ!OS 8.40
------------------------------------------------------------
This FRITZ! Beta offers a first look at the upcoming FRITZ!OS 8.50 and invites users to test new features in advance and provide feedback. The Beta lays the groundwork for new MyFRITZ!App features and optimizes the already industry-leading security architecture of FRITZ! products. In addition, switching FRITZ!Box models is made easier, with new features for Smart Home, parental controls, and telephony, as well as practical improvements to everyday convenience. In the coming months, additional FRITZ!Box models will be added and new features introduced—including the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro with Matter Bridge functionality for more Smart Home options.

------------------------------------------------------------
# New functions of FRITZ!OS

## Internet:
- **NEW** Automatic detection and prioritization of video conferences and similar real-time sensitive communications
- **NEW** DNS queries from the home and guest network can be filtered using specified filter lists
- **NEW** New configuration wizard for simplified switching from DSL to fiber optic from the same provider
- **NEW** Prioritization settings now also allow bandwidth to be reserved for the home network

## DECT:
- **NEW** The new "Simple Mode" for the FRITZ!Fon focuses menus and functions on telephony and greatly simplifies operation. The adjustments primarily address the limitations of older people (accessibility) and give special attention to the needs of less tech-savvy users.
- **NEW** Simple mode: The SOS call allows up to four emergency contacts to be stored, who are automatically called in sequence in case of emergency. Call duration and the number of times the call sequence repeats can be configured
- **NEW** Simple mode: For easier operation by users with restrictions, the following functions and more are available: After activation, the softkeys can be used as quick-dial buttons, such that each button can be assigned a phone number or function
- **NEW** Simple mode: When using keypad dialing, the numeral entered is announced (can be disabled)

## Home Network:
- **NEW** The Smart Check displays the current status of the FRITZ!Box in the MyFRITZ!App and provides tips and recommendations

## Smart Home:
- **NEW** Frequently used smart home routines such as "Leaving the House", "Coming Home" or "Vacation" can be automated with just a few clicks and triggered, for example, with zones (geofences) that were previously configured in the FRITZ!App Smart Home
- **NEW** Smart home routines support IF-THEN linkages with multiple triggers – such as, for instance, zones defined on the smartphone. This means a routine does not start until the last resident has left the house with their smartphone
- **NEW** When the "Turn off in case of overload" function is enabled, smart plugs are turned off after a defined period of time when a defined power level is exceeded

[1] FRITZ!OS DNS filter blocks unwanted content

With FRITZ!OS 8.40 it is possible to block access from home network devices like smartphones or computers to certain internet addresses (known as ‘domains’). The FRITZ!Box supports common standards to read in and process lists of undesirable domain names. Users can also resort to publicly available DNS filter lists to filter out advertising, trackers and malware. Blocking of this kind is configured via the fritz.box user interface under Home Network > Network > Network Settings > Change Advanced Network Settings > DNS Filter. Filter lists can be added and updated periodically or manually, which helps make the internet connection more secure. Additional information is presented in the Online Help on the relevant page (https://fritzhelp.avm.de/help/en/FRITZ-Box-7590-AX/avm/026p1/hilfe_netzwerk_dns_filterlisten). This filtering applies to all home network devices that adopt the IP settings from the FRITZ!Box. This is generally the case. Exceptions can be configured, if necessary.

[2] New prioritization feature automatically ensures the best possible connection when it matters most

The new FRITZ!OS introduces enhancements for even more stable and faster connections, which are particularly beneficial for real-time communication such as video conferences and gaming. They are automatically detected and prioritized. If such communication is currently in progress, the prioritization is displayed in the user interface of the respective network device. This information can also be viewed on the details page up to 24 hours later.

[3] Smart Check shows the current status of the FRITZ!Box in the MyFRITZ!App and outputs notifications and recommendations

With the new ‘Smart Check’ feature, the MyFRITZ!App now shows its users the current status of their FRITZ!Box directly on the start screen. In the categories FRITZ!OS, Smart Home, Telephony, USB, Home Network, Internet, Wi-Fi, LAN and Security, users receive helpful recommendations, notifications and warnings – always with concrete tips for fast implementation. This way users keep track of their home network and can ensure optimum performance and security with just a few steps (iOS: MyFRITZ!App 2.16.0, Android: MyFRITZ!App 2.29.0. or later). Additional Feedback on FRITZ!OS
======================================

In addition to direct feedback in our lab area en.fritz.com/fritz-lab, there are three additional feedback functions in the user interface which provide information. We have automated the processing of feedback supplied by these functions.

1) DSL feedback via "Internet / DSL Information / Feedback"
2) Wi-Fi feedback via "Wi-Fi / Wi-Fi Network": Feedback icon after the clients
3) VoIP feedback via "Telephony / Telephone Numbers / Voice Transmission", "Other" column: Feedback icon after each call

Information on the Lab update:
============================

This FRITZ! Lab firmware is a beta version. We've tested it in standard environments before release, but it may still result in bugs. FRITZ! is not liable for any damages that may arise from the use of the Lab version.

Information on working with Lab versions

We appreciate any feedback from our users, which can be submitted at: en.fritz.com/fritz-lab. This page also lists all of the current FRITZ! Lab versions with corresponding feedback areas.

Before you start testing the Lab version

1) You haven't installed the latest firmware for your FRITZ!Box yet? You first need to update the firmware to the latest release.
2) Save your current settings under "System / Backup". The saved settings will be needed if you want to switch back from the Lab firmware back to the release firmware.

Testing the Lab version

Once the latest FRITZ!OS version has been installed on your FRITZ!Box and you've saved your current settings, you can begin testing.

1) Unzip the "fritzbox-yyyy-labor-xxxxx.zip" file.
2) Use the FRITZ!Box user interface to install the update:
- Select "View: Advanced" in the footer.
- Click "Update" in the "System" menu.
- Switch to the "FRITZ!OS File" tab.
- Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
- Enter the path to the Lab firmware and the name of the Lab file (FRITZ.Box_xxxx-0x.xx-xxxxx-Labor.image) in the input field.
3) The Lab version is installed on the FRITZ!Box. The FRITZ!Box will then restart.

Restoring your device to how it was before testing
You can switch back to the official FRITZ!OS at any time under "System > Update > FRITZ!OS Version" or reset the FRITZ!Box back
to the official FRITZ!OS using the enclosed Windows program "recover.exe" (included in the Lab package).
